YOY: How to Learn Ukrainian With the Help of a Mobile Application With Fun

Primary school students who study in educational institutions with the languages of instruction of national minorities can learn the Ukrainian language with the «YOY» application.

YoY, a mobile application for learning the Ukrainian language by primary school students who study in educational institutions with the languages of instruction of national minorities, was issued. The app has already been approved by the Institute of education content modernization.

The free app is developed by the «Learning Together» Project is designed to help teachers teach and students learn Ukrainian in schools with the languages of instruction of national minorities. 

The app helps you learn the language in a game format through real-life situations. This helps to prepare for the use of the Ukrainian language in everyday life and education. This is facilitated by the topics that are available in the app – they relate to situations at school and at home, food, clothing, gadgets, weather, art, etc.

The interactive form of the app makes learning interesting and creative, while bright visualization and competitive elements make learning a language an exciting game. In this case, users are assisted by two mascots – Lulu and Lolo. They conduct a dialogue with the users, motivate and support them.

After each topic, the app has an intermediate test, and at the end – a final test for all the material studied. However, the purpose of tests is not to give a grade, but to strengthen neural connections and help you learn knowledge.

The application was piloted with target groups of the Transcarpathian and Chernivtsi regions. Tips from children and parents were taken into account to improve the app. 

YoY is available in Ukrainian, Romanian and Hungarian. At the same time, the app is universal, so not only Hungarian and Romanian minorities can learn Ukrainian using it.
