In order to motivate children from Romanian- and Hungarian-speaking communities of Chernivtsi and Zakarpattia regions to speak and learn Ukrainian, the Learning Together project in collaboration with the NGO GoGlobal conducted an educational and entertainment extracurricular program «BombeZNO Camp 2022».

The program was run for three weeks – from 28 November to 16 December in an online format. In the course of the program children worked with facilitators, listened to lectures given by invited speakers, interacted with their peers in teams and worked on creative projects.

The camp was built based on interaction: the Romanian-speaking team worked together with the Hungarian-speaking team, using Ukrainian as Lingua Franca. The interactive program was developed around four topics:

  • «People. We Are Different, but We Are All the Same!»;
  • «Communities. Everything Is Mine, and It Is Called Ukraine!»;
  • «Culture. Hey, Hey, Rise Up, the Red Viburnum!»;
  • «Dreams. Everyone Has a Dream Deep in Their Hearts.»

Expert teachers of Ukrainian worked with camp teams and supported local teachers during the program. The educators also used digital tools for the interactive online part of the program – Padlet, Kahoot, Mentimeter, Wordwall, Canva, Jamboard, etc., which they learned to work with during our offline training.

Massive attacks on critical infrastructure, power cuts and poor Internet connection and communication did not stop «BombeZNO Camps». 18 teams from 39 schools, together with 20 mentors from all over Ukraine, were inspired by themselves and inspired others to learn Ukrainian. During the training, more than 300 children took part in all program activities and another 300 ones could join some of the activities.

One of the most significant achievements of the project is that camp participants started to teach their peers during and after the end of the program. They were teaching their friends how to use interactive digital tools for learning and everyday life – and all that using «BombeZNO» Ukrainian.
