The materials developed by the Learning Together project have been recommended for learning Ukrainian in kindergartens of Kyiv as part of a pilot project launched by the non-governmental organization “Spilna Mova. Centre for Creation and Development of the Ukrainian-speaking Environment”. In the near future it is planned to replicate the project in one of the districts of Kyiv with dozens of kindergartens and schools and thousands of children, and later on – in the whole Kyiv.
The materials comprise a set of learning materials to study Ukrainian as a state language in grade 1 of general secondary education institutions where the instruction is carried out in languages of national minorities and the mobile app “YoY”.
“The use of educational materials developed by the Learning Together project after its completion is one of the objectives of our Sustainability Plan. Such NGO projects manifest that we have developed products that will be useful not only in the regions that we have planned to cover, but also throughout Ukraine for any communities and individuals who want their children to know Ukrainian better,” said Jarkko Lampiselkä, Chief Technical Advisor of the Learning Together project.
The use of the materials is one of the recommendations for learning Ukrainian, which have been developed by the NGO “Spilna Mova. Centre for Creation and Development of the Ukrainian-speaking Environment” for parents of children with a dominant Russian.
The NGO has been working on changing the language landscape of the society in favor of Ukrainian for more than 2 years.
According to a survey conducted by the NGO among educational institutions, 80-90% of Russian-speaking parents in Kyiv are ready to talk more often with their children in Ukrainian, but expect support (conversation clubs, links to content for children, language games, etc.).
A pilot project in one of the kindergartens of Kyiv has increased the share of families who have started to talk more often with their children in Ukrainian from 15% to 80%. The results of these surveys and pilot implementations are now included in the language concept of Kyiv, which the Working Group set up at the Kyiv City State Administration has been developing since November 2022. The concept is planned to be finalized in March 2023.
As a result, parents/educators will be offered comprehensive solutions for learning Ukrainian, including materials from the Learning Together project.
These days our project is discussing systemic cooperation with the NGO “Spilna Mova. Centre for Creation and Development of the Ukrainian-speaking Environment” in order that more and more children learn Ukrainian and use it in their everyday life.
